How it rides
Aizu Kogen Takatsue sits in the Minamiaizu region of southwestern Fukushima, a pocket of the country that doesn't see many foreign riders. The mountain pulls solid snow—depths typically hover around 1.5 meters—and the top elevation keeps things reasonably stable even as the southwest-facing slopes take some heat. The riding itself is mellow: beginner and intermediate terrain dominates, with some ungroomed black runs at the top that aren't particularly steep. There's a small terrain park with a slopestyle course and a half-pipe (or quarter-pipe, depending on who you ask), plus some tolerated tree zones within the resort boundaries and more discretionary sidecountry off the top single chair.

The lift system is dated—eight chairs including a couple of quads, but a few run in parallel so they don't always operate together. Wind holds at the top are real. The base area is modest: a couple of day lodges, a ski-in ski-out hotel (the Aizu Astoria), and various minshuku within walking distance. There's an onsen at the base, which is a nice touch. Weekdays are genuinely quiet, and lift tickets are cheap, especially if you grab a deal from 7-Eleven. You'll need a car to explore the other resorts in the Minamiaizu cluster, which also keeps the place from feeling overrun.

This is an unadulterated Japanese experience—no English signage, no après-ski scene, no western creature comforts. If that appeals to you and you're comfortable with small terrain and aging infrastructure, Takatsue rewards the effort. If you're chasing steep piste or a lively base area, look elsewhere.
