How it rides
Canmore is a compact local hill on the outskirts of Asahikawa, named after the Canadian town and built on the west-facing slopes of Kitoushiyama. The terrain is straightforward: wide, mellow beginner runs flanking the pair lift, a handful of intermediate options, and one steep pitch that tops out at 29 degrees. The quad chairlift is modern and fast, while the pair lift serves the learning slopes with child-friendly seating. Night skiing runs both lifts and draws weekend crowds, especially given how cheap the tickets are.

The main tradeoff is snow. Canmore sits in a snow shadow and doesn't accumulate the depth that nearby areas receive—base depths typically hover around 70cm mid-winter. Off-piste is tight and fenced; the unfenced zone on skiers' right has mellow trees but limited exposure, and elsewhere the forest closes in. The steeper terrain to skiers' right of the Canyon run exists, but adequate snow coverage is inconsistent.

There's no real village at the base, just self-contained cottages and a small day lodge called Alberta. Asahikawa is a 30-minute drive away if you need accommodation or nightlife. For beginners, families, or locals looking for a quick evening session, Canmore works. For anyone chasing powder or intermediate progression, the nearby resorts in the region offer more.
