Gassan is Japan's snowiest resort, opening only in spring and early summer when massive snowpack finally allows it. The trade-off: spring corn and melting snow quality, plus a small terrain park and a 600m walk from the car park.

How it rides
Gassan operates on an inverted calendar—it gets so much snow that lifts don't turn until April, then run through July when other resorts are shuttered. The appeal is novelty and backcountry access: you can skin or tour into the Dewa Sanzan peaks, and in winter a small snowcat operation runs below treeline through deep, forested terrain. The riding itself is straightforward—mostly wide-open slopes with some beech tree sections—but the draw is the sheer snow volume and the chance to ride when everywhere else is closed.

Spring and summer conditions are the real story here. Early season (April) offers decent snow quality and fewer crowds on weekdays, but by May and June the base becomes corn and slush as the southwest-facing slopes soften. Weekends and holidays fill up fast with Japanese riders chasing one last fix before summer. If you're not into skinning or backcountry touring, the on-piste experience is modest—four courses, limited vertical, and a walk uphill from parking.

Winter is entirely different: the lifts close, but backcountry guides and snowcat operators work the area for those willing to earn their turns. The region is remote and beautiful, with onsen and farm lodges nearby, but expect a commitment to access and self-sufficiency if you're visiting outside the spring-summer window.
