Hakuba Cortina is a powder magnet in the northern Hakuba Valley with steep tree skiing and a relaxed off-piste policy. The terrain is compact and rewarding for advanced riders, but fresh tracks disappear fast on big powder days.

How it rides

Hakuba Cortina sits in a tight bowl at the northern end of the Hakuba Valley, drawing serious snow and riders who know the score. The mountain's real strength is off-piste and sidecountry terrain—the trees are mature and well-spaced, the ridges drop steeply, and the resort's permissive stance on self-responsibility areas means you don't have to sneak around or risk your pass. The on-piste offering is modest and mostly beginner-friendly, so the mountain's appeal skews heavily toward advanced riders hunting powder and trees.

The lift system is straightforward: six chairlifts, mostly slow doubles without safety bars, feeding a single basin that funnels back to the base. Wind can shut down the top terrain, and on big powder days the in-bounds snow gets tracked up quickly—powder hunters from central Hakuba make the drive for day trips, which concentrates traffic in a small area. The base is anchored by Hotel Green Plaza Hakuba, a striking property with an excellent onsen, ski-in ski-out access, and decent dining, though nightlife is essentially nonexistent.

Cortina works best as a multi-day stay or a strategic powder-day mission from elsewhere in the valley. The snow quality is consistently better than southern Hakuba resorts, and the tree skiing is genuinely excellent. Just be ready to share the freshies and manage some flat run-outs on the way back down.
