Hounokidaira is a small, quiet resort in Gifu's mountains where powder days mean untracked slopes and relaxed riding. North-facing terrain holds snow well, but expect modest vertical, aging infrastructure, and limited terrain that won't hold your attention for long.

How it rides
Hounokidaira sits off the beaten path for most powder chasers, which means fresh snow stays untracked longer than at better-known resorts. The north-facing slopes hold snow quality reasonably well, and there's some steep piste to work with, including runs that touch 42 degrees. Tree riding exists—an old lift line offers a nice steep line with wider trees to the left—though much of the forest is too tight to ride cleanly. The mountain is small enough that you can see most of it from the base, and the vertical is modest, so don't expect all-day flow.

The base area feels dated, with ramshackle buildings housing basic cafeterias and aging rental equipment; if you're serious about riding, bring your own gear. A closed lift (Number 8) once serviced the best steep terrain, now accessible only by snowmobile sledge service from the quad top. Egress from the steep sidecountry to the right requires care—drop too low and you'll get trapped in a gully. The region's real mountains are better accessed via ski touring on nearby Route 5, which is popular with backcountry riders.

Hounokidaira works best as a powder-day option if you're already in the Takayama area, or as a stepping stone to nearby Hirayu Onsen, where you can soak in a proper ryokan. Don't plan a trip here specifically; plan a trip to the region and ride it when conditions align.
