Iizuna Resort is Nagano's closest ski area to the city, offering cheap lift tickets and a quiet, beginner-friendly vibe. Snow reliability is modest compared to nearby Myoko, and infrastructure shows its age, but the steep pitches at the top and locals' energy on weekends make it worth a visit.

How it rides
Iizuna Resort sits on the eastern flank of Mount Iizuna, just 17km north of Nagano City and south of the bigger Myoko resorts. The mountain rides small but compact, with a quad and two pair lifts accessing terrain that ranges from wide beginner slopes to short, punchy advanced runs that hit 40 degrees. The top lift doesn't always run on weekdays, so plan accordingly. Beginner and intermediate riders will find plenty of space to progress without crowds, especially on weekdays when the place feels almost empty.

Snow is the real tradeoff here. Iizuna sits in the rain shadow of Mount Myoko, so it receives significantly less precipitation than nearby resorts—expect roughly one-third the base of Akakura or one-quarter that of Seki Onsen. The aspect (mostly ESE-facing) doesn't help retention either. When snow does come, there are some nice tree zones and ungroomed pitches near the top, but the resort takes a conservative stance on off-piste access, and lack of snow often makes riding those areas less appealing anyway.

The base building is aging but functional, with a cafeteria, basic rentals, and lessons available. Lift passes are genuinely cheap, and lunch won't break the bank. There's no accommodation at the base, so most riders commute from Nagano City, Myoko, or Madarao. Night skiing runs Friday through Saturday (with some weekday exceptions) from 6pm to 10pm, and the quad operates during those sessions, giving the place a nice locals' energy on winter evenings.
