Character

 • Tree riding
 • Night skiing

Iwakisan Hyakuzawa is a small, mellow resort on Mount Iwaki's southeast flank where lift passes are cheap and crowds are sparse. The terrain is beginner-friendly but lacks steep on-piste runs, and southeast-facing slopes mean snow quality suffers once the sun comes out.

How it rides

Iwakisan Hyakuzawa sits on the quieter side of Mount Iwaki, away from the storm-hammered slopes of Aomori Spring across the peak. It's a locals' mountain—small, unpretentious, and genuinely affordable. The riding is mellow throughout: beginners start on the surface lift near the base, progress through the pair lifts, and intermediates can work the upper terrain without much consequence. The steepest marked course maxes out at 30 degrees and is half-groomed, so even the "advanced" terrain feels approachable.

The tradeoff is limited variety and no real steep on-piste. The southeast aspect means snow quality deteriorates quickly once temperatures rise, and the season typically runs only from late December through mid-March. There is no official off-piste, but tree skiing exists either side of the advanced course if you're careful not to get gullied out. The area works well as a backcountry trailhead for Mount Iwaki ascents, especially in spring when the Tsugaru Iwaki Skyline road opens.

Accommodation is sparse at the base—most riders stay in Hirosaki City or nearby towns. The resort has basic facilities: a cafeteria, ski and snowboard school, rental equipment, and a kids' play area. Night skiing runs select evenings. Lift tickets are valid at both Iwakisan Hyakuzawa and Soma Romantopia, a tiny area 10km south with just 100 metres of vertical.
