Katsurazawa Kokusetsu is a small, mellow ski area run by the town of Mikasa, located in a mountainous region near Lake Katsurazawa. There's room to ride ungroomed snow without heading into the trees, and the small tree zones that exist are low-angle and forgiving. Lift lines are essentially nonexistent, and on weekdays you'll often have the slopes to yourself.<br><br>The low elevation (214m vertical) means snow quality can suffer when temperatures rise, but the NNE aspect helps retain powder through the height of winter. A single pair lift with a mid-station serves the terrain, and you can buy single-ride or 3-hour passes to keep costs down. The cafeteria has decent views and inexpensive food, and parking is free.
