Madarao Mountain Resort is a mid-sized Nagano powder destination known for extensive gladed tree terrain and reliable snowfall. The riding is excellent on fresh days, but lift infrastructure is dated and crowds can build quickly during holidays.

How it rides

Madarao Mountain Resort sits in the northern Nagano highlands and pulls down serious snow—10 to 13 metres annually—with a northerly aspect that keeps the powder quality high. The mountain is built around tree skiing: widely spaced gladed runs with names like Powder Wave, Crystal Bowl, and Powder Theatre let you open it up without constantly threading tight timber. The terrain is forgiving enough for riders new to trees but steep enough to keep things interesting, with pitches up to 36 degrees. Off-piste and backcountry options exist for those with the gear and knowledge, though the best freshies get tracked quickly once word spreads.

The lift situation is the real tradeoff. Nine chairlifts sound reasonable, but they're mostly old, slow doubles and triples from the bubble era—romance chairs, as locals call them. During quiet days you'll barely notice the wait, but holiday periods see long lines and poor management. The mountain layout also requires some zig-zagging between terrain zones, and a big flat traverse on lookers' right can feel like a snowboard trap. Night skiing runs on select evenings off two lifts if you want to extend your day.

The base area and village are spread out but walkable, with the Madarao Kogen Hotel as the hub. Dining and après-ski have improved with western investment—you'll find decent restaurants and bars—but it's nothing like a major resort town. The nearby temple town of Iiyama offers more cultural depth if you venture down for an evening. Madarao works best as a powder-focused mission or as a base to explore the wider Nagano region, where Nozawa Onsen, Myoko, and other resorts are within reach.
