Muikamachi Hakkaisan is a steep, snow-heavy resort in Niigata known for moguls and tree riding. The southwest aspect and small size mean fresh tracks go fast and snow quality can fade, but powder days deliver serious fun.

How it rides

Muikamachi Hakkaisan sits on the western slopes of Mt Hakkai and draws riders chasing moguls and steep tree terrain. The ropeway services nearly the full vertical in one shot, and the consistently steep fall line—especially through the trees—makes for engaging riding when conditions align. Powder days here are genuinely good, and the sidecountry terrain offers steep, well-spaced trees and chutes for those willing to navigate the risks and patrol politics. The mogul runs max out at 38 degrees and have a cult following among locals.

The tradeoffs are real. Southwest and south-facing aspects mean snow quality deteriorates quickly once the sun hits, and the short season reflects that exposure. The ropeway is fast but doesn't have the capacity of a gondola, so lift lines can build on busy days. Off-piste and sidecountry riding are officially prohibited and actively policed—a guiding company holds a de facto monopoly on backcountry access. Beginners and intermediates will find better terrain elsewhere in the Yuzawa region, which sits just 30km away.

Access requires a car or multi-resort tour; the last 2km of road is steep and winding. There's no village at the base, though you can stay in nearby Minamiuonuma or Yuzawa and sample local sake and onsen. Nightlife is minimal. This is a mountain for riders who know what they want—moguls, powder, trees—and can accept the constraints that come with a small, steep, south-facing operation.
