How it rides
Oguna Hotaka sits on the southeast slopes of Mt Hotaka and draws weekend crowds from Tokyo, but weekdays are genuinely quiet. The mountain rides small and straightforward—mellow upper terrain, moderate pitch lower down—with a southeast aspect that can soften snow during warm spells. The real draw is the tree riding: upper zones have decent lines and the staff don't police off-piste aggressively, so discretion gets rewarded with untracked powder. Lower trees are choked with shrubbery and low branches, so focus your energy higher up.

The lifts are six fixed-grip pair chairs, all slow and showing their age. The top lift services just one run, and one mid-mountain chair is awkwardly positioned and feels like a waste of time. Terrain is split evenly between beginner, intermediate, and advanced, but the black runs aren't steep—don't expect on-piste challenge. Snowfall is modest compared to Niigata resorts, though drier powder quality makes up for it somewhat.

Base amenities are functional but dated: cafeterias, rental shops, and ski school (Japanese-language only). No accommodation at the base, so plan to stay in Katashina or nearby towns. You'll need a car to get here and move between the other Katashina resorts. Après-ski is minimal; this is a day-trip mountain, not a destination for nightlife.
