Onikoube is a small, quiet mountain in northern Miyagi with steep upper terrain and mellow beginner slopes at the base. The lifts are aging and wind-prone, and the resort has shrunk over the years—but cheap tickets and tree-skiing access make it worth considering on a Tohoku road trip.

How it rides

Onikoube sits in an out-of-the-way corner of Miyagi, near the Yamagata border, and feels like a mountain frozen in time. The base spreads wide with forgiving beginner terrain, while the upper sections narrow and pitch up considerably. The steepest runs are genuinely steep, and there's tree skiing to the right of the top lift that the resort tolerates as long as you stay out of the lift line. The mountain faces north to northeast, which helps preserve snow, but the resort has seen better days—two upper lifts were shut down years ago, likely due to age and inadequate visitation, which means you won't reach the steepest terrain anymore.

The six chairlifts are fixed-grip, slow, and lack safety bars, and top-lift wind closures are common enough that you should plan for plan-B days. If snow is deep, there's legitimate backcountry terrain accessible from the top, though the resort asks you to check in at Patrol and not re-enter the ski area on descent. Off-piste within the boundaries is technically off-limits due to avalanche risk, and brush can be thick in leaner snow years.

What keeps Onikoube on the radar is the price—lift tickets are genuinely cheap—and the isolation. You won't fight crowds here. The ski-in ski-out Hotel Onikoube sits at the base, though it's aging; nearby Naruko Onsen, a classic hot-spring town, offers better lodging options and some evening energy. This is a mountain for riders willing to accept old infrastructure and limited vertical in exchange for quiet days and steep trees.
