Ryuoo Ski Park is a snowboarder-heavy resort in Nagano with excellent powder snow and steep tree terrain in the Kiotoshi Bowl. The trade-off: it's small, lacks nightlife, and the ropeway is slow and clunky.

How it rides

Ryuoo Ski Park sits on Mt Ryuo in the Kita Shiga region, about 37km northeast of Nagano. The resort has serious vertical and pulls down quality snow, especially at the top where the Kiotoshi Bowl serves up steep, ungroomed lines and accessible tree riding that doesn't see much traffic. The Skyland area above the ropeway offers mellow, scenic terrain ideal for building confidence. Seventy percent of riders here are on boards, and the resort was one of Japan's first to embrace snowboarding — it still markets itself as a place to learn.

The riding experience splits into three zones: the Valley base is beginner-heavy and often chaotic on weekdays; the middle Kiotoshi area is where strong riders hunt powder and bumps; the top Skyland section is gentle and scenic. The ropeway is the main lift to the good stuff, but it's a bottleneck — it takes eight minutes up but only departs every twenty minutes, and on busy weekends you might wait a while to get into the cycle. The lift infrastructure is otherwise modern, with quad and pair chairs handling the lower terrain.

Ryuoo hasn't been westernized, so most services cater to Japanese visitors. The base area has ski-in accommodation, onsen, and basic eateries, though the Sora Terrace café at the top of the ropeway is the popular lunch spot. There's no nightlife to speak of, and the resort is best visited as a day trip or part of a multi-resort tour. Nearby Shiga Kogen and Nozawa Onsen are within reach for a change of scenery.
