How it rides
Sapporo Teine sits just 20 minutes from the city, split into two distinct zones: Olympia below, where school groups and weekend crowds pack the mellow terrain, and Highland above, where the real draw lives. The north-facing slopes hold powder well, and the Hokkaido snow is dry and consistent. A modern gondola connects the two areas, though the link run is so flat in stretches you'll be tempted to walk.

Highland is where advanced riders find their day. The on-piste black runs have genuine pitch—up to 38 degrees—and the sidecountry tree skiing is legitimately good: trees spaced just right, consistent fall-line, and enough steepness to feel it. The permitted off-piste areas to skiers' right track out quickly, but if you're willing to hike beyond the boundary, there are bowls and chutes worth the effort. Traversing in and out is part of the game here.

The lift situation is a mixed bag. The modern quad services the full Highland vertical, but some of the older double chairs feel like relics. Wind holds on the top lift happen. There's no on-mountain lodging, so you're commuting from Sapporo or staying in nearby Otaru. Nightlife at the base is minimal—the city is where the energy is. For powder hounds willing to manage logistics and traverses, Sapporo Teine delivers.
