Tengendai Kogen is a remote, uncrowded highland resort with excellent tree skiing and sidecountry terrain accessed by ropeway. The upper zone is mellow and flat, but the real draw is the steep, lift-serviced backcountry beneath the cable car—though cold temperatures are essential for snow quality down low.

How it rides

Tengendai Kogen sits at 1,820m in the Yamagata highlands near the Fukushima border, far enough from major cities that you'll rarely see another rider. The upper zone—three slow chairlifts and a handful of groomed courses—is mostly mellow and becomes painfully flat in fresh snow, especially between lifts. The real terrain lives under the ropeway: steep tree skiing, gullies, and mini spines that drop off a cat track and feed back to the base. These lines are south-facing and demand cold, stable snow; when conditions align, it's phenomenal. When they don't, the aspect works against you.

The 6km longest run includes a 3km descent from the ropeway station back to base, though much of the upper zone will feel like a traverse. Lift infrastructure is dated and slow, and the layout creates awkward flat sections and run-outs that break rhythm. There's no night skiing, and the base area is minimal—a cafeteria mid-mountain and a rest house. The real experience is the village of Shirabu Onsen, a 700-year-old onsen settlement 1km away with historic ryokan and genuine isolation from the tourist circuit.

This is a road-trip mountain, not a destination resort. You'll need a car (4WD recommended) and patience with slow lifts and mellow piste terrain. Come for the tree riding and sidecountry when snow is deep and cold, and stay in the village for the onsen culture. Expect school kids and locals, not crowds.
