How it rides
Hoshino Resorts Nekoma Mountain combines two formerly separate areas—the north-facing Nekoma side and the south-facing Alts Bandai—connected by a new lift. The north side is where powder hounds find their reward: better snow quality, longer seasons, and well-spaced trees that reward riders willing to work for fresh lines. The south side caters more to families and intermediates with groomed runs and contemporary amenities including a ski-in ski-out onsen hotel. Weekdays are genuinely quiet across both sides, making this a genuine escape from the Tokyo-area crowds that descend on weekends.

The riding experience hinges on terrain flow and tree access. Off-piste skiing in the trees is officially discouraged but increasingly tolerated, especially on the north side where most riders stay on-piste and fresh lines are common. The marked runs are modest in steepness—don't expect extreme terrain—but the tree skiing offers real challenge and reward. A new pair lift connects the two sides at elevation, allowing strong intermediates and above to move between them, though the south-to-north crossing via Excite 1 and 2 is tougher for mid-level riders.

Infrastructure is a real tradeoff. The lifts are aging double chairs that don't always run reliably, and top-lift wind closures happen. The south side's low elevation and southern aspect mean variable snow quality and a short season. If nightlife and village energy matter, look elsewhere—Nekoma is genuinely low-key, with modest food and lodging options outside the Alts hotel. But for powder days and quiet tree riding, especially on weekdays, this is a compelling choice.
