Character

 • Local hill
 • Night skiing

Asahi is a tiny, uncrowded hill in rural Hokkaido with mellow terrain and affordable lift tickets. It's a solid backup when wind shuts down bigger resorts nearby, though the limited vertical and two runs mean a short session.

How it rides

Asahi sits in Shibetsu City in Northern Hokkaido, about 20km from town. It's a single-lift operation with two marked runs and a quiet vibe β€” mostly locals and school groups. The terrain is split between groomed beginner and intermediate runs and off-piste zones in low-angle trees. On-piste advanced terrain is sparse, but the side-country and backcountry options offer decent powder lines when fresh snow comes through, and the area stays practically deserted so you'll find untracked snow.

The real draw is the escape hatch: when wind closes Kiroro or Kokusai down the road, Asahi stays open and rideable. Lift tickets are cheap, parking is free, and the base lodge has food and rentals. The downside is obvious β€” two runs and 172 vertical meters means you're done in a session or two. The hill operates afternoons on weekdays and mornings on weekends, so plan accordingly. There's onsen accommodation nearby in Asarigawa, though the village itself is modest. Best used as a day trip from Sapporo or Otaru when conditions or crowds push you elsewhere.
