How it rides

Wassamu Higashiyama is a no-frills town-run ski area that rewards early risers and powder hunters willing to drive into rural Hokkaido. The mountain opens at a leisurely 10am, and the lack of crowds means you'll often find untouched snow on the piste and in the trees. A pair lift and single chair service the modest vertical, with the pair running night skiing most evenings—a genuine convenience for a place this small.

The real draw is the tree riding. Off-piste terrain between the marked runs features reasonably tight trees and some pitch, while lift-accessed sidecountry on skiers' right offers better spacing and vertical with small creeks and gullies to navigate. The on-piste terrain maxes out at 30 degrees, so expect mellow to moderate pitches on the groomed runs themselves. Beginners have a couple of peripheral trails; intermediates will find the marked runs adequate.

Be aware that this is a small area with limited resources—no avalanche control or rescue infrastructure in the backcountry, so you need to know what you're doing if you venture off-piste. Opening times and lift schedules are inconsistent, especially in late season, so check their calendar before driving out. There's no accommodation at the base, and nightlife is essentially nonexistent; most riders stay in nearby Asahikawa, 41km south.
