Pippu is a small, quiet hill near Asahikawa that shines on powder days and storm cycles when bigger resorts close. Cheap tickets and mellow off-piste terrain make it ideal for learning sidecountry, though limited vertical and low elevation mean fresh snow doesn't last long.

How it rides
Pippu is the kind of place you visit when the weather turns brutal and the ropeways at Asahidake or Kurodake shut down. It's a low-elevation hill—just 330 metres of vert—but that's partly the point. On a powder day, the sparse crowds and easy-to-navigate tree terrain make it feel like your own private resort, especially for riders still learning the ropes in sidecountry. The mellow off-piste sections have moderate spacing and low angle pitches, and route-finding is straightforward enough that you won't spend half the day lost.

The trade-off is real: low elevation and southwest aspect mean fresh snow doesn't hold quality long, and the hill itself won't hold your attention for more than a day or two. All three chairlifts are fixed-grip, and the A lift runs night skiing until 8:30pm through February, which can be useful for squeezing in extra runs on a storm day. Lift tickets are genuinely cheap, and the base-area cafeteria serves solid food at prices that won't hurt. If you're staying in Asahikawa and want a recovery day between bigger mountain missions, or you need somewhere to ride when everything else is closed, Pippu delivers. Just don't expect après-ski—the town is quiet, and most riders base themselves in Asahikawa for nightlife and restaurant options.
