How it rides
Asahi Shizenkan sits in the Asahi Mountain Range as a genuine locals' resort—minimal crowds, minimal lift infrastructure, and lift tickets that won't hurt your wallet. The riding here is straightforward: two chairlifts serve five courses across 320 metres of vertical, with beginner terrain separated at the base and intermediate groomers in the mid-section. The upper run pitches up to 34 degrees and feeds into ungroomed terrain. The real draw is tree riding. Evergreens between the two sides of the hill hold snow well under the canopy, and the trees don't grow tight, making for open, flowing lines. Sidecountry access to the skier's right also works if you know how to move through it.

Snow quality is the tradeoff. Asahi Shizenkan doesn't catch the heaviest storms that hit further northwest—you're on the leeward side of bigger peaks—and the southeast-facing aspect means on-piste snow gets sun-affected quickly. Fresh tracks are best in the trees where shade protects the base. The access road is steep and winding; you'll want 4WD or AWD. There's a hotel with an onsen and a few ski-in cabins at the base, plus day lodges with cafeterias, but don't expect much in the way of après-ski or village energy. This is a place to ride powder in the trees and move on.
